|   | | July 1 - Today will determine whether England's team are for real or whether they have
flattered only to deceive for the umpteenth time since 1966.
This is a strong English team, with a gifted midfield featuring four world-class
players in Gerrard, Lampard, Cole, and Beckham and a potentially brilliant
striker, but he's been injured and sub-par (Rooney's foot will be the talking
point if England is eventually eliminated), and there are a lot of questions
surrounding the defense.
We think they'll get knocked out today by an underrated Portugal team, provided
they get the services of their most gifted youngster, Ronaldo. Even if England
manage to advance they must deal with Brazil in the next round, presuming the
Samba Kings get by an aged French team in the second game today.
England have poor recent history in tournament soccer with both these teams.
Portugal has had the measure of them and Brazil knocked them out of the last
World Cup. Nevertheless, England continue to draw healthy betting support to win
the 2006 World Cup in Germany, even though they haven't shown that level of form
to date.
The games on Friday saw a classic battle between Germany and Argentina, with
nothing to choose between the two teams, as expected.
It was tense drama as opposed to the beautiful game with few clear-cut scoring
chances, but the penalty shootout was tremendous fun to watch for the neutral.
Germany's odds to win it all are now even shorter, but they face a huge
challenge against Italy, a team that has almost slipped under the betting radar
up until now.
But look at what Italy has accomplished so far: They won the "Group Of Death"
dealing with talented teams like Ghana, Czech Republic, and even the USA. They
then beat a plucky Australia even though they had to do it with just 10 men.
Last night they breezed past the Ukraine, and played brilliant football in the
process.
They now have a great chance to get to the final and possibly win it all, and if
we were going to bet on any one team to upset Brazil to win the World Cup it
would be the Azzurri.
