|   | | November 27 - In Canada land or online
gambling operations must be licensed by a recognized online gambling
jurisdiction or authority to be considered legal. However, the Canadian province of Ontario is looking
to further regulate the online gambling industry by introducing Bill 152.
Bill 152 is designed to make the advertising and sponsorships of 'illegal'
or unlicensed online gambling websites illegal across the province to
better enforce the existing regulations that apply to online gambling in the
province.
Up until now the regulation of online gambling has not been conducted at a
provincial level in Canada. For illegal online gambling companies currently
marketing in Ontario, Bill 152 could be a large blow as many rely heavily on
advertising and sponsorships to promote their websites and events.
Section 13.1 (1) of the proposed code reads: 'No person shall advertise an
Internet site that operates an Internet gaming business contrary to the Criminal
Code (Canada).'
Another section takes care of online gambling sponsorships, 'No person shall
enter into a sponsorship relationship with an Internet gaming business that is
operated contrary to the Criminal Code (Canada).'
While Bill 152 is currently only at a proposal stage, if approved by the
provincial legislature it will most probably be implemented in early 2007.
