|   | | July 31 - Linden Lab, the creators of the popular virtual world known as Second
Life, have announced that they have banned all forms of gambling from the
Internet-based 'realm' that boasts over 8.4 million members, as a direct result
of the US online gambling ban.
Using the alias Robin Linden, Second Life's senior vice president of marketing
and business development, Robin Harper wrote recently in a Linden Lab blog, 'We
have chosen to restrict gambling in Second Life as described in a revised policy
which is posted in the Knowledge Base under Policy Regarding Wagering in Second
Life.'
The announcement came after Linden Lab invited the FBI to investigate the many
online gambling facilities created in Second Life by many of its members or
'residents' as they are known, and advise them if their presence were contravening any laws.
Judging by the posting, clearly Linden Lab was advised to drop the gambling
facilities in Second Life, even though many were owned, operated and indeed
funded in real money, by people not based in the United States where all forms
of gambling are in fact legal.
The company has also revealed that going forward its staff will investigate and review
appropriate notices of avatars (screen icons or characters) that are breaking
these new rules and take immediate action in terms of removing the said games or
objects that violate the policy.
It is interesting that even in a truly virtual world, nothing is safe from the
influence of the world's most powerful bully, the United States government.
