|   | | November 22 - Even though the online gambling ban in the United States 'fell
right into the laps' of America's large land gambling operations, it seems that
many are ready to enter the highly lucrative online gambling themselves
assuming that the ban is eventually overturned.
On Wednesday this week, executives from two of Americas and indeed the world's
biggest casino operators, MGM Mirage and Harrah's Entertainment, revealed their
desire to get involved in online gambling at a Global Gaming Expo.
MGM Mirage chairman and CEO,
Terry Lanni said, 'While our first venture into online gambling may have been
financially unsuccessful, it served to lay the groundwork for MGM Mirage to take
advantage of Internet gambling opportunities in the future.
In 2001 MGM Grand set up and online gambling operation in the Isle of Man but it
was short-lived because the company chose to undergo a more stringent online
registration process than many of its competitors.
'We closed our online gambling operation down with the knowledge that we knew what we
were doing, and are confident that when the US online gambling legal issues have
been sorted out, that we can become a force to be reckoned within the industry,'
said Lanni.
Gary Loveman, Harrah's Entertainment chairman and CEO, predicted that online poker
rooms would be legalized in the United States in the next 18 months to 2 years, as
opposed to online casinos, which he believed to be at least 8 to 10 years away.
