|   | | June 26 - The BetOnSports court case took an interesting turn this week when the siblings of its founder, Gary Kaplan, and his personal assistant, all pleaded guilty to charges of felony racketeering. Niel Scott Kaplan and Lori Beth Kaplan Multz, along with Penelope Tucker, all admitted to the charges in St. Louis court on Monday.
As part of the charges of felony racketeering, the three guilty parties agree to forfeit millions of dollars they are accused of obtaining via illegal gambling operations.
It is reported that the founder of BetOnSports, Gary Kaplan, was relieved that his brother and sister were able to reach an agreement with the legal authorities. Now that the three have pleaded guilty, they will avoid imprisonment charges, but need to hand over their share of over $7 million obtained in profits from the company's online gambling activities, all of which is held in offshore bank accounts.
The three guilty parties, however, are not completely free to go. They brother and sister will each serve a few months in a halfway house and will both be under house arrest for about eight months. Penelope Tucker will serve a one year's probation sentence.
Former CEO of BetOnSports, David Curruthers, had also previously reached a plea bargain with the authorities, even though he still maintains his innocence. Gary Kaplan is the last of the company's management to still face trial for the case.
When commenting on the light sentences received by the three guilty parties, the Assistant US Attorney for the case said that they all had minimal roles in the financial dealings of the company, had almost no decision making power and that their willingness to surrender the money helped the court's decision.
