June 1 - Today marks the day that the United States fully implements the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, aka UIGEA.
Many hoped that continued pressure on authorities would eventually lead to the UIGEA being delayed as it was in January 2010, or even done away with altogether.
However, online gambling critics were adamant that this time the law would be implemented.
As such, from today, it becomes illegal for banks to process gambling transactions.
While online casino players do not face penalization, the banking industry and financial groups are forced to monitor literally millions of transactions and restrict them if they relate to online gambling in any form.
Thankfully, many gambling experts believe that the UIGEA is doomed to fail before it even begins.
It is difficult to comprehend how the authorities actually expect the banks to monitor all these transactions physically, and even if - by some miracle - they do find a way, casinos will find a new way very quickly to accept deposits.
The truth of the matter is that online gambling is here to stay and no amount of legal interference will halt this fact.
Some analysts even believe that the implementation of the UIGEA is a good thing because it will show once and for all that even with such a controversial law, there is no stopping online gambling.
The government will realize that the only way to go is by introducing a legal and regulated online gambling industry in the United States - a fact that pro gamblers have been arguing all along.
