|   | | June 5 - While spelling bees have always been a mainstay of American school
life, in the last few years they have made a seemingly effortless transition
onto the big screen (Spellbound 2002, Bee Season 2005 and Akeelah and the Bee
2006), and now they have even made onto online betting sites.
Yup, punters who enjoy betting on the more unusual of sports and pastimes can
now place bets at most good offshore online betting sites on their favorite
young 'word nerds'. Forget about the Super Bowl, World Series or Kentucky Derby, this
could be the new sport of
champions!
And why shouldn't it be? Just because it involves pre-pubescent, squeaky-voice,
zit-infested kids is no reason why you and I shouldn't have fun wagering on who
will be able to spell the kind of words even Pulitzer Prize winners have to look
up in their dictionaries.
While to this writer spelling bee's are only one rung higher in the interest
stakes than watching wet paint
dry, I suppose the knowledge that you have real money riding on the
mental abilities of a gawky 8th grader is in itself pretty exciting stuff.
So how long will it be before the National Spelling Bee becomes more popular than
the World Series of Poker?
From this writer's point of view, probably not too long at all, considering we
live in a world where people are more interested in Paris Hilton's upcoming
prison jaunt than the war in Iraq!
LOL - spell that!
