July 8 - In recent months, organizations such as the French Tennis
Association and others have brought the issue of sports betting on tennis
events to the forefront of public attention. But while most of these
associations were trying to keep the game of tennis out of the online betting
arena - even taking the matter to court on a number of occasions - it seems to
have had the opposite effect.
According to sports betting sites, tennis betting is on the rise and a
huge number of online gamblers have discovered the fun of predicting the next
tennis champion and making money in the process.
In recent years, one of the highest records was set in the online tennis
betting industry when over 5 million Pounds were spent in betting on a single
tennis match.
However, during this year's Wimbledon tournament, that record was
broken when sports betting officials showed that over 8 million Pounds were
spent betting before the quarter final match between top seeded players Rafael
Nadal and Andy Murray. The largest single bet on Nadal was a whopping 32,000
Pounds, while the highest on Murray was 1,000 Pounds.
Online tennis betting experts are quite amazed at the speed in which this
form of wagering has taken off the ground and grown in the past couple of years.
There are many factors that can be attributed to the rising popularity of tennis
betting, including the general increase in popularity of sports betting as a
whole, as well as the media attention given to tennis in particular.
The issue of fixed matches, of course, has added much negative publicity to
tennis betting, but gambling experts reassure the public that these cases are
few and far between. Unfortunately, official tennis bodies are using these rare
cases to try to bring a clamp down on the tennis betting industry as a whole.
However, with tennis become more popular with each passing year, and online
sports betting with it, it seems that trying to stop this type of past time is
an exercise in futility.
