|   | | May 14 - Like a stray dog with a marrow bone, the US Justice Department has sunk
its teeth into online gambling and will not let go as demonstrated by yet
another series of arrests in connection with the illegal funding of online gambling websites.
Seven people and four companies have been charged with multiple felonies in the
state of Utah in relation to assisting online gambling websites to process over
US $150 million in credit card payments from US-based online gamblers.
In a 34-page indictment issued last week, it was revealed that the accused
operated a business that helped US online gamblers disguise credit
card charges in relation to the funding of accounts in online casinos, poker rooms and
sports betting sites.
This deception was designed to 'throw off' US credit card companies and issuers
who are not allowed, under the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act of 2006
passed last year, to process online gambling-related payments.
Said Brett Tolman, US attorney for the District of Utah, 'The law states that
people who facilitate online gambling in the United States are in violation of
numerous state and federal laws. Payment processors that try to camouflage
online gambling-related transactions will be prosecuted and brought to justice.'
If convicted, each of the accused could receive 20 years for money laundering, 2
years for transmission of wagers/wagering information, 20 years for racketeering
conspiracy, and 30 years for bank fraud.
While Top Gambler does not condone the breaking of law or illegal activities, surely the flawed Bush
administration can recognize that, like the Prohibition in the last century,
removing people's basic freedoms will result in illegal activities?
Yes, the above accused stood to gain financially through their activities, but
remember that ordinary Americans chose to use their services so that they could
exercise their choice to gamble online from the privacy of their own homes.
What has happened to this once great democracy that has now become a common
target for terrorists, a global bully, a war monger, a political laughing stock, and
now, a suppressor of the rights of its own citizens?
