|   | | June 15 - Gary Kaplan, the founder of once leading online sports book, BetonSports, has been
refused bail by a federal court in St Louis, Missouri where he is facing fraud and
racketeering charges.
Mary Ann Medler, a United States magistrate told the St Louis court that if freed on
bail, there was a risk that Kaplan may flee since neither he nor any of his
family had any real ties to the community.
The 48-year old online gambling executive, who was arrested in a hotel in the
Dominican Republic hotel in March of this year, made his first appearance in
court last month where he pleaded 'not guilty'.
On May 24th this year, executives at BetonSports plead guilty to a single charge
of conspiracy in connection with racketeering, and are currently providing
prosecutors in St Louis with evidence against Kaplan and ten of his
co-defendants.
Since the arrests, BetonSports has become insolvent as well as filed for bankrupty
in the United Kingdom. It is one of many online gambling firms severly impacted
by the US online gambling ban last year.
