|   | | May 2 - Many online gambling enthusiasts residing in the US state of Washington
heaved an enormous sigh of relief last month, after Bill 1243 was passed by
Washington State legislators to 'correct' excessive C class felony charges for
gambling
online in the state.
Under the previous legislation, online gamblers convicted of gambling online
within the privacy of their own homes in the state faced the same charges
that child molesters or even people convicted of threatening the life of the
state Governor would face.
As a result,
Washington State legislators introduced Bill 1243 earlier this year to correct
excessive felony charges applicable to individuals charged with playing poker
online or gambling online at home for recreation as opposed to for 'organized profit'.
Said Republican Chris Strow, R-Whidbey Island, who introduced Bill 1243,
'Obviously choosing to gamble online or play a skill game such as poker online
by a consenting adult, is not a crime equivalent to threatening the
Governor's life or possessing child pornography.'
However, SB 1243 does not apply to the operators of online gambling website
based in the State of Washington, since their activities are considered prosecutable because they would promote and profit from online gambling.
Regarding the legality of online gambling in the United States as a whole, Congressman Barney Frank recently unveiled his plan to legalize and regulate
online gambling.
However, while Frank's Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act of 2007 (IGREA) does not repeal the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act (UIGEA), it is designed to set out guidelines and benchmarks to implement licensing and regulatory standards aimed at online gambling operations based within and outside of the United States.
