|   | | February 14 - Ask most email users anywhere in the world what the biggest bane
in their life is, and chances are they'll say 'spam', a seemingly
endless stream of indiscriminate and unsolicited email, usually promoting cheap
pharmaceuticals, porn and even online gambling.
However, according to a recent study by American Internet security firm,
Websense Security Laboratories (WSL), online gambling-related spam makes up less
than four percent of the world's total 'spam attacks'. In fact, only a miniscule
3.84 percent of spam is linked to online gambling.
This is extremely good news for the online gambling fraternity, which is
constantly trying to maintain its reputation as a legitimate, fair, honest and
regulated industry, particularly in the face of ongoing political and social criticism,
scrutiny and persecution from many corners of the world.
The report revealed that during the second half of 2007, the frequency of
'storm' spam attacks - a combination of spam agents, bots, Trojan horses and
worms - increased considerably, exposing a higher number of email users and
companies to spam campaigns than ever before.
A WSL spokesperson confirmed that 'storm' spam attacks are becoming increasingly
better planned and executed by spammers, as well as progressively more
resilient in terms of getting through high-tech firewalls. This has resulted in
millions of 'infected' computers around the globe.
