| February 6 - After the recent passing of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) many are now looking to Asia as a replacement market for the US.
Macau is now the biggest location for land-based casinos and the Cagayan region of the Philippines has licensed online gambling.
There have been huge growth spurts in Asian high-speed internet access. However the percentage of internet users of total population in Asia is 10.5% and is a fraction of the US at 69.5%.
Asian areas may prove to be the springboard to expand online gambling in the East, however there are still many drawbacks.
There are very strict exchange control rules within Asia, making cash transfers to online businesses based outside Asia are difficult and sometimes illegal.
There is large potential as an online gambling market in Asia but Western operators need to exercise patience and be very sensitive to their far-Eastern operations, if they want to benefit in the long-term.
