|   | | July 26 - The great news for
online gambling operators in the United
Kingdom is that from September 2007, they will be able to advertise their
online casinos or online gambling businesses on British television.
This 'freedom of speech' is in line with the UK Gambling Act that was passed in
2005, and awards the online gambling industry the right to openly advertise
their services.
However, despite this new freedom, strict guidelines will be put into place to
ensure that online casinos and gambling companies operate within the bounds
acceptable to the British public.
The Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice (BCAP) and the Committee of
Advertising Practice (CAP) will chair widespread public discussions to formalise
these guidelines in time for September 2007 when the Gambling Act comes into
effect.
Said BCAP and CAP chairman, Andrew Brown, 'It will be our overall responsibility
to ensure that all gambling and online gambling advertisements are socially
responsible and avoid the encouragement of underage gambling or exploitation of
problem gamblers.'
In addition, both the Gambling Commission and Advertising Standards Authority (ASA)
will act as 'watchdogs' by routinely assessing all online gambling related adverts once they start appearing on TV
and in print.
Should any of the ads contravene the guidelines, they will automatically be
referred to the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK
communications industries, Ofcom, which will take the necessary actions.
