|   | | May 8 - In Japan, both land and
online casinos are currently illegal. However, the
country's ruling Liberal Democratic Party is supporting a new campaign to
legalize casinos in both forms.
This 'about turn' in Japan's long-held attitude towards casinos and gambling may possibly act as a beacon for the rest of Asia to follow in terms of
changing anti-online gambling policies.
A Japanese subcommittee operating beneath the country's tourism committee has
suggested that the legalization of online casinos and online gambling sites in
Japan could dramatically boost the country's economy.
It has also been suggested that the Japanese government would greatly benefit
from the taxation of a legal and regulated online gambling industry.
The subcommittee is expected to hold many discussions on the future and
feasibility of online casino gambling in Japan with various governmental
departments and possibly even gambling operators themselves.
There has, however, been a slight backlash by various Japanese social action
groups who have expressed their concerns about the potential dangers of online
casinos flooding the country's Internet, and their subsequent impact on the
youth of Japan.
The Japanese government has responded by reassuring these groups that the social
aspects of online casino gambling will be considered in great depth before the legal status of online gambling and casinos
is altered.
