|   | | May 11 - A recent online gambling industry survey has shown that the majority of
online casino players and people who place bets online are generally affluent
and well-educated.
The survey, commissioned by the American Gaming Association (AGA), was conducted
amongst 552 online gamblers and showed that almost 41% earned over $75 000 per
year and over 61% had at least a college degree.
Only 12% of the people polled earned less than $35 000 per year. Almost 50%
admitted to gambling online because of the convenience factor and more than 66% of
the online gamblers polled were men, as well as under the age of 40.
AGA President, Frank Fahrenkopf Jr admitted that previously the AGA had been
opposed to the legalization of online gambling in the United States because
regulators were opposed to it, and the AGA has always been the largest supporter of
gambling regulation.
'Now that online casino technology has changed so much, plus the fact that
online gambling is legal and properly regulated in the United Kingdom, we feel
that perhaps Congress should take a good look at legalizing online gambling
in the US,' he said.
Many of the strongest opponents to the legalization of online gambling in
America have used the excuse that the people who gamble online can least afford it.
However, the AGA survey has shown otherwise.
Currently, the online gambling industry employees over 354 000 people around the
world who earned over $12.6 billion in wages last year.
In the countries
where online gambling is legal, the industry has paid almost $5 billion in fees and
taxes to local and state governments.
