Minnesota Politician Tries to Block Gambling Ban - 05-10-09

>>

May 10 - Minnesota's Department of Public Safety is up against a tough fight as it goes ahead with its plans to block the access of over 200 online gambling sites to state citizens.

Last week the state demanded that ISPs and phone companies deny access to these gambling sites or face the consequences.

However, at least one politician has come up against the decision and has slammed the state for interfering with citizens' basic right to visit websites they choose.

"I'm certainly not condoning online gambling," said Minnesota State Representative Pat Gerofalo (Farmington) in a statement on Monday "But I have serious concerns about government banning access to websites."

"This is the kind of thing they do in communist china, not the United States of America," he said. "Besides, how about we focus on balancing the state's $6.4 million budget deficit and not harassing Minnesotans anymore than Democrat legislative leaders are already trying to do."

The Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division of the Department of Public Safety in Minnesota claims that online gambling is illegal in the state and therefore ISPs and phone companies can be compelled by law to block players from accessing these sites.

There has been no indication from ISPs thus far whether they intend heeding the warning letters sent out to them by the department or not.

"The Department of Public Safety has to have better things to do with their time than to go after a college kid in his dorm room or some guy sitting in his basement spending a couple of hours playing online poker," said Gerofalo. "Demanding that a private sector internet service provider block access to websites is not a proper function of our state government."
