|   | | November 13 - Just when the online gambling community thought that 'it was all quiet
on the Western Front' (a war reference representing the United States and its online
gambling witch hunt), the Governor for the state of Massachusetts, Deval
Patrick, has publicly announced that he wants to fine and jail US online
gamblers.
Wow, for a country that is run by an administration that virtually the whole
world hates, you would think there would be bigger 'fish to fry' for US
politicians - such as trying to improve its global image, extricate itself from the war in Iraq, ease national unemployment levels, address spiralling
drug abuse, understand and prevent the increase in school shootings,
etc - rather than put vast amounts of time and resources into chasing down a few
people who sit in the privacy of their own homes and choose to gamble online.
Patrick has proposed a bill whereby people convicted of gambling online could
face Class C felony charges which, if convicted, means that they could spend up to two
years in prison. Imagine spending two years in prison just for playing an online
slot game or playing in a $1 online poker tournament! Picture sending someone to
prison to share a cell with a convicted killer/rapist/arsonist etc, just because
they went all in on a 4K unsuited, in a silly game of online poker.
Ridiculous.
United States, the so-called land of the free is fast becoming the land of the
bully, where US authorities are only to happy to create senseless bills to turn
into senseless laws that directly contravene the so-called rights and freedoms
of the very citizens whose freedoms and rights the government is supposed to
protect and uphold.
And talk about hypocrisy. While it is perfectly acceptable for any American to
walk into a drugstore and purchase as many Lotto tickets as he or she wants, or
spend every last dime playing the horses, it is 'bad' and 'wrong' for someone to
spend $10 gambling on an online video poker game or to buy a $0.05 online bingo card.
But perhaps this goes deeper than just US politicians.
Perhaps this 'way of thinking' is indicative of a nation that for too long has felt superior to the
rest of the world and that the 'pressure' of this arrogant perception is
literally melting minds and creating a general 'paranoia' that is turning this once
respected country into a small-minded, apathetic police state.
Did you know, for instance, that more Americans voted to decide the finalist of
a recent Idols TV contest then voted in the presidential election to decide on
the future leadership of their country. Talk about mind boggling stuff.
Interestingly though, recent surveys have shown that an increasing number of US
states are ready to support the legalization of online casino and online
poker websites. Where then do these 'devils' disguised as 'Devals' come from,
and what motivates them to spearhead campaigns and causes that clearly do not
echo the sentiments and perceptions of the American people.
While it is not the intention of this writer to 'bash America' it is simply to ask the when and why the United States turned into a 'big brother' state that the US politicians in the 1950's used to accuse communist Russia of being? By the way, if you have read this far, I thank you. Now feel free to go back to watching Jerry Springer or Scooby Doo re-runs.
