January 26 - One of the UK's leading bookmakers, Ladbrokes, has
reassured its customers that a recent security breach will not jeopardize their
financial details.
According to Ladbrokes, a mystery man with an Australian accent approached
the Mail newspaper over the weekend and offered them access to Ladbrokes'
database consisting of names of 4.5 million customers from the UK and around the
world.
The man passed on information of 10,000 of these customers to the Mail. This
included names, telephone numbers, gambling history and dates of birth.
The publication contacted Ladbrokes, which in turn brought in the police and
the Information Commissioner's Officer.
But while the security breach is being taken very seriously, Ladbrokes rushed
to reassure its customers that the data did not contain any information that
dealt with their financial details.
Most importantly, passwords and banking data were not included in the
information.
"We have been informed that a person connected to our organization has
offered certain details from a customer database to the Mail on Sunday," said
the Head of PR at Ladbrokes, Ciaran O'Brien. "This is a criminal act and we are
working with the police, the ICO and the newspaper to identify and apprehend the
culprit."
"We are in the process of contacting customers to apologize for this breach
in security and to reassure them that everything is being done to protect their
personal information," continued O'Brien "Importantly, this does not affect
customers passwords or banking data."
