|   | | September 13 - Along with the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, was the
loss of 17 000 jobs of people working in casinos, now battered or destroyed,
along the Mississippi coastline.
It has been suggested that the casinos could be back in operation in as little
as 9 months.
The Gulf Coast chapter of the Mississippi Casino Operators Association (MCOA),
convened last week to discuss the possibility of operating casinos on a
temporary basis, perhaps for as long as 3 years.
MCOA executive director, Beverly Martin confirmed that discussions centered
around long and short-term solutions to getting the casinos operational again.
She said that many of the casino operators have decided not to rebuild their
casinos on their original sites due to the current floodwater situation. Instead
they will set up 'temporary' premises within a mile or two of their original
locations.
At the MCOA, a spokesperson for Harrah's Entertainment, owners of Harrah's
in New Orleans, Grand Casino Biloxi and Grand Casino Gulfport, said that at this
stage it was important to get casinos operational as quickly as possible in
order to give people jobs.
