|   | | February 2 - Online gamblers based in Israel were delivered a blow this week, as
an Israeli court delivered a ruling effectively banning online gambling firms
from marketing to and accepting Israeli players.
The court case centered around large Gibraltar-based online bookmaker, Victor
Chandler, which over the past few months has been running an aggressive
marketing and advertising campaign throughout Israel.
Judge Abraham Heiman told the court that even if online gambling companies
are
based off shore, along with their servers, they are still breaking the law if
they provide access to Israeli online gamblers.
While previously the Israeli government 'turned a blind eye' to Victor Chandler,
permitting it to operate in a 'grey area' legally, its recent high profile
advertising campaigns on Israeli buses and billboards proved to be the straw that
broke the camel's back.
As is the case in France and a few other European countries, gambling is
controlled by a state-run gaming board in Israel, effectively forming a
monopoly, and Israeli authorities unhappy with the growing success of Victor
Chandler, decided to take action.
Judge Heiman made it clear that online gambling websites are no longer welcome
to attract Israeli gamblers, either via online or traditional advertising
methods.
