|   | | March 4 - The Israeli government is reportedly looking to pass a law that will
prevent Israelis from access certain websites, including those that
offer online gambling, pornography and those that are perceived as being 'too
violent'.
Last week, MK Amnon Cohen representing the Israeli religious party Shas,
introduced a bill which, if signed into law, will require Israeli Internet
Service Providers (ISPs) by law to block any websites containing the afore
mentioned content.
While this is being viewed by the world as heavy-handed censorship, if any
Israelis (presumably above the legal age) wish to visit these types of websites,
they can make a request to their respective ISPs to gain access to the
particular sites.
If the law is passed, the Israeli government is expected to give the country's
ISPs 60 days to block the sites from their services, while local search engines
will have the same amount of time to remove them from their results, or face
stiff fines.
News of the proposed law has been met with much criticism from within Israel,
particularly from Gilad Erdan, chairman of the Knesset Economic Committee who
said, 'This type of censorship will only serve to turn Israel into a kind of
Iran.'
Ironically, Iranians currently have access to pretty any and all Internet
content, including online gambling, pornography and presumably 'violent'
websites.
