|   | | June 27 - Et tu Israel, et tu? It has been reported that a District Court in the
Israeli town of Tel Aviv has upheld a lower court ruling that
offshore-based online gambling companies that target Israeli online gambling
fans are breaking the
law.
The ruling came to light during a recent court appeal involving Michael Carlton,
the CEO of British-based Victor Chandler online casino which is licensed and registered
in the online gambling-friendly jurisdiction of Gibraltar.
While visiting Israel earlier this year, Carlton was subjected to a barrage of
questions from the infamous Israeli Bat Yam fraud squad on suspicion of running
an illegal online gambling operation in the state of Israel.
It is no secret that Victor Chandler is one of the most popular online gambling
destinations in Israel.
Even though Bat Yam did not file any fraud charges, Carlton was put under house
arrest and was only allowed to leave the country if he agreed to pay more than
$70 000 in 'court guarantees' which is what his appeal was about.
During the case, the Israeli lower court ruled that the Victor Chandler website
was in violation of Article 225 of the Criminal Code, meaning that the District
Court was facing an appeal and task of deciding the legalities regarding online
gambling in the country.
It was up to the court to decide whether Israelis choosing to gamble online
through offshore-based online gambling destinations were breaking the law. And
unfortunately for the online gambling world, the Israeli superior court upheld
the ruling of the lower court.
It declared any company operating an online gambling site targeting Israelis is
breaking the law, regardless of whether the site is registered and operated
abroad. Oy vey, why can't online gamblers the world over simply gamble online in
peace?
