|   | | January 15 - In a surprising turn of events, the Caribbean islands of Antigua
and Barbuda, which are also a well-known online gambling jurisdiction and recent
victors in a mammoth and lengthy dispute with the United States, have failed to
earn a place on the UK's online gambling 'White List'.
In a release, the UK Department of Culture, Media and Sports announced that it
would be adding the online gambling jurisdiction of Tasmania to its white list,
but would not be adding Antigua and Barbuda to the list along with the popular
online gambling jurisdiction of Kahnawake in Canada.
The decision is a blow for both jurisdictions which between them have licensed a
good portion of the world's top-rated online gambling destinations. It means
that their licensees - online casinos, poker rooms, sportsbooks and bingo halls
- cannot advertise their services in the United Kingdom.
In response to the announcement, director of gaming within Antigua's financial
services Regulatory Commission, Kaye McDonald expressed her disappointed at the
Department's decision, but remained confident that Antigua and Barbuda will make
the UK's white list in the near future.
'We understand that this is an ongoing process and will continue to work closely
with the UK government. We take comfort in the fact that Tasmania was initially
not allowed onto the white list but over time managed to meet the necessary criteria, and
we aim to follow suit,' she said.
