|   | | December 28 - This week it was revealed that on January 1st 2008, Germany will
become the latest country to ban the popular practice of online gambling within
its borders, after its various states ratified an accord that will keep the
country's state gambling monopoly intact.
German joins a growing list of countries that have banned their citizens from
gambling online at foreign-owned online gambling websites including the United
States, Norway, Turkey, and many others that are either protecting their state
monopolies or feel that online gambling is 'evil'.
A German government spokesperson, Eric Braum, confirmed that at least 13 of
Germany's 16 states have submitted the ratification documents required to go
ahead and ban Internet gambling, with the remaining 3 expected to have been
submitted before the new year.
By the middle of December this year, all 16 states voted to approve the new
online gambling laws, which will effectively prevent German online gambling fans
from partaking in online gambling by ordering German Internet Service Providers
(ISPs) to block access to foreign online gambling websites.
This action as well as the country's intention to ban online gambling
advertising on the Internet as well as on German media including TV has drawn
criticism from many of the world's largest online gambling operators that run
online casinos, online poker rooms, online sportsbooks, and online lottery
sites.
Earlier this year, the European Commission (EC) which regulates the European
Union (EU), called on Germany to reconsider its online gambling ban citing
reasons that the ban was 'disproportional. Germany, however, rejected that the
EC's request, saying that it needed to 'protect its citizens from the dangers of
gambling online'.
