| April 18 - A new registration system has been added to the Second Life game by Linden Lab, who are the creators. The recent federal interest in online gambling at Second Life online casinos has made Linden Lab cautious. This is however not the only reason for the system, it is also connected to child protection issues.
The company stated that the basic principle of Second Life is that all its residents are lawfully responsible for all their activities and for compliance of laws of the local jurisdiction in which they live.
There will now be 2 classes of users: 'verified' and 'unverified'. Verified refers to a registrant that has submitted the applicable identification and payment to the company. Unverified means they have not. Users are then able to confirm aspects of each other's identities, for example age, jurisdiction etc...
Second Life hopes that these features will facilitate residents and they will obey the rules of their own local laws.
Second Life businesses will then be in a position whereby they can screen casino customers, enabling them to avoid those who may be underage or whose local legislation does not allow online gambling. Teen and adult separation will also be more comprehensive.
