|   | | April 16 -China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) recently announced that the
Chinese government will assign 'Virtual Cops' to monitor the Internet with the
objective of seeking out and eliminating online gambling websites, pornographic
sites and other 'illicit' websites.
According to the MPS, by June this year virtual cops will be in place to monitor
all major online portals, blogs and forums across China in order to 'weed' out
websites that are deemed illicit and harmful to the Chinese people, in
particular online gambling and porn sites.
Currently there are approximately 137 million Internet users in China, the
majority of which are young people. As such, the MPS launched its Virtual Cops
last year in Shenzhen, when it placed cartoons depicting policeman on various
sites that were linked to police stations.
The Chinese government is so concerned about Internet content that the MPS is
just one of ten government departments that will take part in the online
campaign to protect its citizens against fraud, vulgarity and online gambling
that the government deems are 'harmful to young minds'.
Said MPS vice-minister, Zhang Xinfeng, 'We believe that these type of websites
have directly affected the healthy development of the Internet and, in so doing,
have harmed the minds of Chinese youth. It is our objective to 'clean up' the
Internet to make it safe and respectable.'
